Catalogues for Israeli stamps

I am interested in purchasing a catalogue for Israeli stamps and was wondering if anybody could briefly desribe the pros and cons of the Carmel catalogue and appropriate Scott volume (Bale is too expensive at this time). Thank you.

Pitman, I am a new collector. I started with the Scott catalogue which I bought on CD Rom; but found it not as useful as the Bale catalogue, which I subsequently purchased from House of Zion in California. The costs of the two are comparable. In my short time collecting stamps I find that it is worth while to have a good catalogue. One is really hunting in the dark without a good catalogue. Of course you probably can find the Scott catalogue in your local library. In ours the current catalogue is in the reference section and the catalogue of the year immediatly preceeding is on the shelves of the books for circulation. I am not familiar with the Carmel catalogue you mention.

Do not rely on the Bale catalogue. As Eric Morecombe once said to Andre Previn "I'm playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order"!

The Bale catalogue has so many mistakes, that I do not use it any more.

However, I use the Moriah catalogue and it lists a NO Phosphor variety as No.744a. My stamp has no detectable phosphor tagging.

If you're a really serious collector of Israel, by all means use the Bale catalogue, but have you really used it or the question should be can you use it?

The Bale catalogue is in my opinion almost unreadable. It has too much information, a lot of it in the wrong order and some of the information irrelevent. It has not been proof-read. The only redeeming feature is the quality of the production and this is reflected in it's high price.

I use the Israeli Moriah catalogue or the Israel Postal Service catalogue - both are straightforward and in a logical order. They don't go deeply into vaieties etc., but at least can be easily read.
